INDIGENOUS GRADUATION COACH (INTERMEDIATE)

We are accepting applications for the following Non-Union 1.0 FTE permanent Indigenous Graduation Coach (Intermediate) at the Education Centre in Seaforth, Ontario.

Hours of Work : 35 hours per week

Compensation Package Details :

Rate of Pay : $65,452 - $76,225 per Level 4 in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Non-Union, Management, Administrative and Supervisory Employees

Pension Plan : Defined pension plan through the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS)

Summary:

The Indigenous Graduation Coach will support the well-being and achievement of Indigenous students in grades 7 and 8. The successful candidate will provide essential support to Indigenous students as they transition into secondary school. Responsibilities will include identifying barriers to student learning, engagement, and well-being, as well as collaborating with school staff, parents, Indigenous community partners, and external agencies to build networks and foster student success. The Indigenous Graduation Coach will play a crucial role in improving achievement, well-being, and graduation rates for Indigenous students across the district.

The successful candidates will report to the System Principal of Program Services and work as part of the Indigenous Education team and will be responsible for offering support to Indigenous students across the district. 

Responsibilities:

  • Build positive relationships with Indigenous students 
  • Identifying barriers and solutions to student learning, engagement, and well-being
  • Facilitate access and referrals to community and school resources to provide integrated support for student achievement and well-being
  • Organize and facilitate leadership development for students that is culturally relevant
  • Create space for students to voice their experiences to support the Board and secondary schools to establish responsive services
  • Build and maintain profiles for individual Indigenous students
  • Track and monitor Indigenous student achievement and well-being
  • Act as an advocate and role model for students in pathway planning and post-secondary destinations
  • Connect students with their opportunities to learn about their cultural identity 
  • Organize and facilitate student leadership development opportunities
  • Collaborate with the Indigenous Education team in efforts to build system capacity in understanding and serving the needs of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Students.
  • Establish a safety plan during breaks in regular programming (i.e. long weekends, extended breaks, etc.) for at-risk students
  • Engage with parents, guardians, families and communities to build trust, relationships and facilitate communication and dialogue
  •  Work collaboratively with teachers, school staff, families and communities to advocate for the needs of Indigenous students
  • Participate as a member of school and system Student Success Teams to support Indigenous students
  • Engage with parents, caregivers, families, communities and education staff through ongoing visits and conversations as part of the needs-assessment and support process
  • Communicate with senior staff in order to remove barriers to student well-being, engagement, and learning
  • Support the development of integrated Indigenous cultural knowledge for all education staff
  • Provide mentorship to other central staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies/Services, First Nations Family Support/Community Worker, or related field, or other related field of study or a combination of equivalent skills, abilities and experiences working with or supporting Indigenous youth
  • Extensive experience deeply rooted in local Indigenous communities (minimum 2 years of experience)
  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person 
  • Knowledge of Indigenous traditional teachings, cultures, perspectives, values and history
  • Deep connection with local Indigenous Communities
  • Proven skill in building trust, respectful and safe relationships with Indigenous Youth.
  • Proven skill in providing both group and one-on-one support
  • Awareness of local Indigenous community resources and ability to connect students and families to these resources
  • Ability to be a mentor and an advisor to Indigenous students
  • Ability to work with Indigenous students and their families outside of school hours and travel to Indigenous communities as required
  • Valid driver's license and use of own vehicle
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language (e.g., Anishinaabemowin) and/or OCT qualifications are an asset but not mandatory
